NYU Administrator Arrested PDF Print
Wednesday, 23 December 2009

By Aidan Gardiner

A New York University administrator was indicted and arrested on December 23 for stealing over $400,000 from the university and falsifying business records. He now faces up to 19 years in prison.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced that between September 2003 and January 2009, John Runowicz, the budget coordinator for NYU’s chemistry department, had produced false receipts and attached them to reimbursement forms in order to earn back money for non-existent expenses.

According to a press release from the DA, NYU discovered the scheme during an internal audit of university finances. The university then reported the theft to the District Attorney’s office. "Mr. Runowicz was fired from the University some time ago," said university spokesman John Beckman in a public statement, "We have every confidence in the criminal justice system’s handling of this matter from here.”

Runowicz found discarded cash register receipts from Warehouse Wines and then attached them to reimbursement request forms before submitting them to the university bursar’s office. He claimed that the receipts represented chemistry department supply purchases. “Carrying on his scheme for over five years, Runowicz fraudulently submitted over 13,000 receipts from the liquor store and stole $409,000,” the DA release said. “None of those receipts reflected legitimate business expenses.”

“The University is deeply disappointed that one of its employees would abuse the trust of our students, faculty, administrators, and staff in this way," Beckman said.

Runowicz has been indicted on one count of grand larceny in the second degree which can be up to 15 years in prison. He has also been indicted on six counts of falsifying business records in the first degree which carries up to four years in prison. Both are felonies.

Flier tries to revive movement

By: Kristina Monllos AND Idil Abshir

In the wake of the turmoil of the last academic year, The New School in Exile and other student organizations that helped to wage an anti-administration campaign have been relatively quiet. This fall, the anti-Kerrey dissident movement has maintained a small-scale presence on campus, only distributing pamphlets and other literature. During orientation week in September, students distributed a flier entitled "A Disorientation Guide to The New School." The flier, written anonymously, was also posted online.

Where Have All the Protesters Gone? PDF Print
Wednesday, 23 September 2009

By Idil Abshir

Last school year, The New School was rocked by two building occupations when students took over 65 Fifth Avenue as part of an effort to oust New School President Bob Kerrey. Following the second occupation at 65 Fifth Avenue, many of the protesters were arrested. With the end of the academic year many central members of the movement left The New School. It remains to be seen what, if anything, will be the movement’s next step.

Kerrey To Leave New School In 2011 PDF Print
Friday, 08 May 2009

 By Aidan Gardiner

At a board of trustees meeting on May 6, New School President Bob Kerrey announced that he would leave the university when his contract expires on July 1, 2011. Kerrey said that he made the announcement now to give the board enough time to search for and hire a new president for the university. He added that the recent student protests did not play any part in his decision.

"I believe it's good for the university for me not to renew my term," said Kerrey in an interview on May 7.

"I think the university benefited from having a high energy entrepreneur person who could raise the profile, raise some money," he said. "But I think it probably needs a more traditional academic leader now."
