By Aidan GardinerApril 1 was originally planned as the day when students would shut down The New School, but instead turned out to be roughly two dozen students gathered for an underwhelming conclusion to two months of tension. According to plans made at a public meeting on March 29, the event was supposed to be a roving rally starting from 66 W. 12th street, but became a small discussion when organizers realized too few people were present. The student group New School in Exile set April 1 as a day for a wide range of student actions including a university shut down, unless President Bob Kerrey and Executive Vice President Jim Murtha resigned. Because of organizing troubles, NSIE has been unable to build a broad base of support, despite efforts to do so. Many, including some within the group, believed NSIE's tactics are too alienating. Only five or so NSIE participants were present at the event. The group was largely made up of Radical Student Union members, another student group which has worked closely with NSIE in the past, especially with during the December occupation of 65 5th ave. Pat Korte, RSU member and Lang student, addressed the audience in the 12th street lobby asking, "Why are there so few of us here?" Korte went on to say that issues that had once been more prominent, like socially responsible investment, have since been pushed to the background because of the anti-Kerrey movement that began in December. "[We have] work to do to transform the movement from Bob Kerrey to other issues," he added. Yotam Marom, RSU member and General Studies student, argued that the anti-Kerrey movement lacked support because students don't find it relevant. "We haven't framed the conversation at The New School in a way that reaches people," said Marom, addressing the gathering. Marom said that he does not believe that New School students are apathetic, but rather that they care about global issues and how the university relates to them. He referred to it as, "a beautiful surprise." "Student movements are relevant as parts of larger issues," he added. Korte elaborated on the same point and said that the student movement should refocus on university connections to global issues. "Drawing these concrete connections between larger issues is incredibly important," said Korte. The group went on to discuss upcoming events around New York City including an anti-war rally on April 4. At least four security guards stood in the lobby during the event. Security had been heightened at every building in case anything resembling the December occupation should occur again. Following the brief event at around 5 p.m., Kerrey walked through the Lang courtyard, joking with students. "I resigned!" he said, smiling. Trackback(0)
